What is the real definition of dog restaurant?

In North America dog restaurants really mean dog friendly restaurants. That is, restaurants that will allow patrons to bring along their dogs when they go dining in a restaurant. Invariably in all cases the dogs will be welcome in the open area of the premises. It is very rare that you will find restaurants that will allow dogs inside the premises. One exception though: under the Americans With Disabilities Act, all restaurants are obliged by law to allow guide dogs inside or outside of the premises.

There are a number of websites that will list all the dog friendly restaurants in North America. Example www.petfriendlytravel.com will list dog friendly restaurantS, beaches, campgrounds and parks.

Interestingly there is no federal law in North America to prevent restaurants from allowing dogs inside the premises. However for hygienic reasons the local health department of each region has its own guidelines on allowing dogs inside the restaurants. A restaurant owner will have to make extensive changes to the layout of the restaurant in order to obtain a variance from their local health authority to allow dogs inside.

In Europe dogs are allowed inside Restaurants. That is patrons can bring their dogs with them in the inside and outside areas of the restaurant. There are etiquettes to follow when bringing your dogs to a restaurant...... click for details. In Japan there are special schools to teach dogs and their owners proper etiquettes and behaviour when they take their pets to a restaurant.

In Asia most restaurants will not allow dogs inside, except probably if the pet is so small that it is barely noticeable and not being an inconvenience to other guests.

The Asians though have gone one step further in the definition of dog restaurant. They mean restaurants that cater to dogs. It is not a dog friendly restaurant where the pet owners go for dining. It is a restaurant that serves the dogs only, not their master. There are tables and chairs that are much lower than the regular restaurant's tables and chairs to accomodate different sizes of dogs. The menu lists dog foods and drinks for the dogs to enjoy.

You will be able to find dog restaurants in its true sense in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. I thought that I heard a similar dog restaurant was recently opened in Seattle, Washington State. Dogs love to go to restaurants as they have an opportunity to meet with and socialise with other dogs. Dog lovers likewise love it because it gives them extreme pleasure to pamper and show off their dogs to other dog lovers. The cost of food at a dog restaurant is not cheap by any means but the owners don't mind the bill.

Some restaurants carry the name "dog restaurant" but not in its true sense:

The Flying Dog Restaurant
The Smoking Dog Bistro
Sea Dog Restaurant
The White Dog Restaurant
The Froggy Dog Restaurant
White Dog Cafe
The Barking Dog at the Affinia Dumont
Dog patch Restaurant
